Cu2O, or cuprous oxide, is a vital inorganic fungicide and bactericide. Mechanism: Cu2O acts primarily as a protectant. It must be applied before infection occurs. Copper ions disrupt enzyme systems within fungal spores and bacterial cells upon contact, preventing germination and growth. It forms a protective barrier on plant surfaces.

Key Applications: Widely used in orchards (apples, pears, grapes, citrus), vegetable crops (tomatoes, potatoes, cucurbits), and ornamentals. Applied as a foliar spray, often in fixed-copper formulations like Bordeaux mixture or as standalone wettable powders or suspensions.

Benefits: Offers reliable disease suppression. Less prone to promoting pathogen resistance compared to some systemic fungicides. Valued in organic production systems where approved formulations are permitted. Generally provides some residual activity.

Important Considerations: Coverage is critical; thorough application to all plant surfaces is essential. Effectiveness diminishes after rainfall (poor rainfastness) and reapplication is often necessary. Can cause phytotoxicity (leaf burn) on sensitive plants, especially under slow-drying conditions or high temperatures; always test on a small area first. Visible blue-green residue on foliage is normal.

Toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates; prevent drift or runoff into water bodies.
